Moving into an apartment in New York City or Long Island can sometimes be a challenge. “Who should I call to move my stuff?” “Should I bother my friends and family?” What if something gets broken during the move?” And, “What is the correct way to move that darn flat screen TV?”
luxuryrenting not only specializes in luxury apartments for rent in Suffolk and Nassau counties, but we are also masters at the “art-of-the-move!” Below are luxuryrenting’s preferred moving tips so you can get into your new rental apartment with ease.
Sometimes when packing boxes or containers, the natural inclination is to fill them to the top without regard for who will be lifting the box or if the container you selected will hold the contents inside. When packing up for your next apartment move, remember to always pack lightly! Don’t over pack the box, you wouldn’t want to give your helpers a hernia, or worse, have the bottom drop out of the box and see all your valuables smashed at the curb. “An ounce of prevention…” in this instance, is truly the proper phrase.
As Seen on TV
These days everyone has a flat screen TV in their apartment for rent in NYC but not everyone is a pro at keeping this item safe during a move. So, if you’re not one of those people who saved the box your TV arrived in (let’s face it, who really saves those things?), then you’ve got to protect–what some consider–the most valuable item in their home! Here’s the solution; wrap the entire TV in bubble wrap and secure the bubble wrap with strong packing tape-careful not to get the adhesive from the tape on the TV itself. If you don’t have bubble wrap, use a soft blanket and wrap the entire TV, again, seal with strong packing tape. Lastly, after all the care and attention you just gave to your component, remember to pack it safely in the van. Do not pack it where something may fall on top of it and don’t place it where it may end up falling to the floor. Here’s some good news, most luxuryrenting apartments come with cable connections already in the walls-just make sure you contact your cable provider early enough so you’re sure your service is turned on for the day you move in.
Let’s Toast to Glasses
After the move, as you settle in to your new apartment, wouldn’t it be great to sit back with a cool drink or toast “the perfect move” with a glass of wine? Well now you can! First thing you’ll want to do is visit your local liquor store and ask them if they have boxes with built-in dividers (these are boxes that are typically used to ship wine bottles to the store). The proprietor will be happy to give them to you for free and these boxes are simply perfect for packing glassware safely for the move. If you can’t get a hold of these boxes the next best thing to do is grab some newspaper and thoroughly wrap the glasses (using at least two to three sheets of newspaper for the wrap). Some folks stack or “nest” glasses together to secure them more efficiently. Whichever way you choose, make sure you have packing tape and a marker to label the boxes “fragile” so movers know to handle these particular boxes with care.
The first night in your rental apartment in New York, Suffolk or Nassau County is a joyous occasion but remember you’ll probably be dog-tired at the end of the day, so let’s make sure your bed arrives in one piece! Many places these days sell mattress bags and covers which are made of thick plastic and designed to slip on and off your mattress easily. These covers protect your mattress from punctures, spills and stains that may occur during the move. The bed frame is a bit more-tricky. The frame should come apart and the pieces should be bungeed together and placed on the floor of the moving van. Just be careful, the steel frame can be heavy and may have sharp edges. The box spring is usually large and cumbersome so make sure you have plenty of help to lift and move this portion of your bed.
While these tips may not work for every apartment move, they sure can’t hurt! So if you’re planning your next apartment rental with luxuryrenting Luxury Rentals you can be assured that when you arrive, your apartment will be ready and waiting for you to place out the “Welcome” mat.
